Cornell Becton, 37, was arrested on unrelated charges at around 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, the Bridgeton Police Department said in a news release on Monday, Oct. 14. He was also given charges in the killing of 59-year-old Wilbert Pace, which happened that morning.
Officers responded to East Commerce Street between Laurel Street and Mayor Aitken Drive at around 3:30 a.m. Police found Pace suffering from several stab wounds behind a downtown building.
Officers tried to save Pace's life but he was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived at the scene. Pace's last known address was on Pamphylia Avenue.
Becton was charged with homicide, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. He was held in the Cumberland County Jail without bail.
